But having compiled a highly contentious list of the best post-apocalyptic games, I wanted to find out more about what drives this fascination with the end of civilisation. The game greedily wolfs down apocalyptic archetypes, borrowing from TV, film, books and scripture to create its huge, detailed world. As the lead character, the player can interact with this world as a moral blank, playing factions off against each other and crafting a reputation as a trustworthy warrior or a double-crossing weasel. This time, the action centres on the west coast where a fragile community is attempting to carve out a post-nuclear existence, while several aggressive factions slowly move in to claim the land.
